![]() Using metaphorical lyrics, challenging time signatures, and subtle yet impacting key changes, he created a signature to his artistry. He pushed limitations that so many dared not to touch. His songwriting talent is widely revered in the music community because he was fearless. His range is like a category five hurricane: unpredictable and terrifyingly powerful. He managed to soak up influence from larger than life front men like Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne, and Alice Cooper, translating it into something all his own. He may have established himself as a legend during the tidal wave of the Seattle sound, but his versatility as a singer and performer reach well beyond the era of grunge. I’ve never heard anyone, in all my years of exploring and listening to music, have such control over a voice so wild and raw. If I could pick one musician to fill the soundtrack of my life, it would be Chris Cornell. My first experience with him was when my former roommate showed me the music video to his song “Black Hole Sun.” His voice immediately gripped me, and years later, continues to surprise, thrill, and enlighten me, bringing me more joy than I ever thought an artist could. But there was one person that rose above the rest early on in my discovery. Artists like Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, and so many others have become vital musical sources to me. ![]() I had this overwhelming sense of familiarity, like I’d finally found a home in music. It was a life changing experience for me. I was raised on classic rock, so though I listened to some Nirvana in high school, I didn’t truly fall in love with the genre in full form until I was in my early 20s. I got into 90s grunge a couple of decades late.
